| Will this retrofit void my warranty? |
It shouldn't. We have sold several kits to dealers themselves. |
| What's with the long, boring disclaimer? |
Simply a contractual agreement. Almost anything you buy nowadays come with an agreement. Here, we simply put out the disclaimer for you to read instead of searching it as a fine print hidden somewhere. |
| Will this retrofit damage the transmission, cause the car to stop suddenly, or behaves irregularly like shifitng suddenly from M5 to M1? |
The only damage we have heard of is the smile on your face. We have sold more than 200 kits already to BMW owners from Singapore, Malaysia, to Canada, US, Brasil, Eastern Europe and more countries.None of us have reported anything unusual. The retrofit is tested at AutoX events and track schools. Everything works well. |
| How difficult is the DIY? |
On a scale of 1 (easiest) to 10 (most difficult), we would rate this as a 6. Some basic technical knowledge is required. The instructional manual should help you a lot. |
| Do you perform local installation in Southern California? |
Yes weI do, depending on work schedule. Takes about 1 to 2 hours to work on the retrofit. We will provide all the necessary tools. We charge a fee for local installations. See Products for more info. |
| Why are there so many pages in the DIY manual? Seems like a lot of work! |
Well, that is because we use large pictures in a very spaced out format. Each set of instructions is well defined and boxed up appropriately. We want to write up a detailed DIY rather than a brief 5-step DIY. For the price you pay, you get a well prepared DIY. |
| Is this retrofit a reversible process? Because I might need to sell my car when the lease is up. |
Yes. Since no cutting, no stripping, no tapping or no splicing of exisiting wires are required, you can reverse the process like it has never been retrofitted with the SMG wheel. |
| Can I DIY the SSG paddles myself? |
There won't be any DIY retrofit of the SSG paddles. The bottom line is we have to modify the electronics of the SSG paddles and the steering wheel. To be truthfully honest, the reason why we never release a DIY for that is the delicate procedures needed. If you make a mistake, the paddles and steering wheel are nothing but paper weights. We have familiarized through my past experiences on modifying the SSG paddles. We'd rather that you leave that expertise to me. We have gathered enough experiences to do this. |
| The lease on my BMW is ending soon and I don't plan on keeping the car. Can I uninstall the kit easily? |
Yes you certainly can. Our kit won't leave any signs of modifications. It's a clean retrofit and will be a clean uninstall. However we need to mention that for SSG paddles to be mounted onto a steering wheel, uninstalling the SSG paddles will leave a mark on the steering wheel. This is because modifications have to be made to install SSG paddles. |
| I recently bought a used kit from the forum. Seller claims he bought the kit from you. Is there a way to check? |
Every kit we sell is numbered and recorded. Email us the number you have and we will check for you. |
| Does the M3 SMG wheel include the paddles? |
Yes. They do. |
| What is the wiring harness made of? |
The wires are third party. Everything else are ordered from BMW. We designed the harness such that no cutting, no stripping, no tapping or no splicing of exisiting wires are required. |
| What is the individulized serial number for? |
Each serial number has been chosen to be uniquely yours, when you buy the kit from me. They are not consecutive numbers but randomly chosen by me. This serial number is recorded in my database and is used to obtain technical support from me. Besides, it can be used to check for the authenticity of the product. |
| What is the difference between Steptronic and Full automatic transmission? |
Steptronic transmission allows you to control the gears you want to be driving in. Whereas Full automatic does not allow that. This retrofit kit will ONLY work with Steptronic transmission. |
| Can the SSG paddles be retrofitted onto the SMG wheel? |
Unfortunately no. |
| Can the SSG paddle-shift retrofit work on a X5 or E39? |
Yes. |
| What is the difference between SSG and SMG paddles? |
Each SSG paddle has a bidirectional mechanism that allows a up and down gear shifting. Each SMG paddle has only an unidirectional mechanism. This explains why the SMG paddles are labeled with a plus or minus sign. |
| Which is more expensive: SMG or SSG paddle shift retrofit? |
The SMG paddle shift retrofit is pretty much standardized with a brand new SMG wheel and the paddle-shift DIY kit. On the other hand, the SSG paddle shift retrofit cost depends on the steering wheel you prefer. In other words, this retrofit is more tailored made. |
| Can I replace the M3 SMG wheel lower trim with a wood trim? |
Yes you can. But BMW does not officially sell the wood trim. You might have to approach aftermarket dealers for help. Runs for about US$300 to US$450. |
| I have a SMG E46 M3. Can the SSG paddles work? |
Yes, with the proper modifications. Email us for more info. |
| If I have a E60 5 series with steptronic, can I get the E60 SMG paddles to work? |
Please read our official statement on the front page. Email us for more info. |
| I have a 1998 E39. Will your kit work? |
The short answer is no. But if you modify the necessary control units, steering column etc, we can build a kit for you. However we have no details of the modification. |
| What is in the kit? |
A45. Customized wiring harness, column switch and instructions. |
| Is the customized wiring harness something I can buy from BMW? |
No. The customized wiring harness is in-house fabricated. Not something we pull from the BMW shelf and call it our own. The harness is specially made for the retrofit. |
| I already have a steering wheel and I want to modify it with paddles. Can I buy just the kit and SMG paddles/switches from you? |
We do not offer this as a product and we advice that you do not try to modify the steering wheel yourself. But if you insist that you want to do it, email us and we will send you a quote. Note we are not liable for any damages you might incur on your steering wheel. |
| Can I just buy the SMG wheel from you? |
Unfortunately no. we only sell the SMG wheel together with the kit. |
| Can I just buy the manual? |
No, unfortunately. |
| Can I just buy the SMG M3 wheel from you? |
Sorry but the SMG M3 wheels are only reserved for the complete paddle-shift retrofit set. You can buy the wheel from your local dealer. |
| Can I request the instructional manual before buying the kit? |
No. Propriety knowledge will not be distributed unless you buy the kit. |
| I want to tap both paddles and activate SD mode when the shift knob is in D mode. Can this be done? |
Yes. But by special request only. Email us for more information. |
| Will you be working on a X5 (E53) or E39? |
Both X5 and E39 paddle-shift retrofit sets are now available. |
| I have a 1999 E39. Will your kit work? |
For pre-March 1999, unfortunately no. Only post-march 1999 E39s. |
| Will the kit work on a E36 or E34 BMW? |
At the moment, no. Sorry. |
| Will the kit work on a E31 BMW? |
At the moment, no. Sorry. |
| I have a 1999 E46. Will this kit work on my car? |
Yes, it will work if you acquire the round airbag as well. |
| Do you have a kit for E6X BMW? |
Yes, we had one. But we are not releasing for now and in the near future. |
| When is the MINI DIY kit ready? |
We have decided to put this project on hold. Once it is ready, it will be sold as a kit from our website. No other dealers are carrying the MINI paddle-shift retrofit kit. |
| Do you have a kit for E9X BMW? |
Yes, we had one. But we are not releasing for now and in the near future. |
| Why is this kit so expensive? |
Dr. Vincent (Mr Paddle.Shift) started this project as a passion to retrofit ALPINA Switchtronic wheel not the SMG wheel. He has the slightest desire for the paddles initially. He spent a great amount of time studying the electrical diagrams and testing the circuit with a voltmeter and ammeter. All these are accomplished without anyone's help. Most of the forum members gave him their support and inspiration. Every single harness is built from scratch by hand. He is the first person to successfully retroft this system in the US and possibly in Europe and Asia. The scarcity and originality of this kit make this DIY kit a little expensive. |
| Why is the SSG paddles-retrofit more expensive than SMG paddle-shift retrofit? |
The SSG paddles are expensive parts. They are designed by BMW but fabricated in Japan. Note that the SSG paddles function quite differently from the SMG paddles too.
|
| Does the price of the kit or set include the airbag? |
No. BMW never sells the airbag and steering wheel as a single entity. We offer the airbag for $575.00. |
| Why is your steering wheel more expensive than Ebay? |
We buy our steering wheels from BMW and no where else. |
| How much is the round airbag? |
It is priced at about $500 to $800, depending on where you buy it from.
|
| I am a dealer/tuner/car
parts retailer. How do I go about setting up a deal with you? |
For distributorship concerns, please email us. |
| Damn! You are ripping
people off! Why are you like this? |
We don't
jump on someone else's wagon and ride along with the risks that
someone has taken. Conceptually nothing is difficult. For example: "Oh, let's get more airflow into the throttle body!".
It's not the concept that is costly. It's the "how" and
risks taken that are included in the price. Some people might come
along offer a cheaper kit, that's becuase their cost DOES NOT include
the risks that we took. From this, we hope you as potential paddle-shifters
can appreciate a little better.
|
| Will Dinan engine
and/or transmission software work with your kit? |
Yes, either/both
will work.
|
| Can you ship overseas? |
Yes, we can. You decide which
courier service you desire. We don't ship via UPS, that's all.
|
| How many BMWs have
you personally installed? |
About 100 or so. Includes a number of E46s, E53s and E39s.
|
